Do you ever feel like you have a "guardian angel"? A voice in your head that warns you not to go down a certain street? A sudden stroke of luck that saves you from disaster at the last second?
In the West, people call these Spirit Guides. In African Spirituality, we call them Amadlozi (The Ancestors).
But for most people, the connection is weak. It is like having a weak Wi-Fi signal—you get fragments of messages, but no clear instructions.
Here is how to strengthen that signal and build a direct line of communication with your Spirit Guides.
In the Image above: Person meditating with candle: How to connect with spirit guides and ancestors using African spiritual rituals. This image represents the quiet moment of "phahla"—sitting in front of your Umsamo, lighting a white candle, offering water, and speaking from the heart. In African Spirituality, the flame is a doorway between worlds and the water is a mirror for spirit. When you sit calmly, breathe deeply, and call your Amadlozi by name, you are not just imagining things—you are opening a real channel to your spiritual team.
First, you must understand the hierarchy. You usually have three types of guides:
The Primary Ancestor: Usually a grandparent or great-grandparent who loved you or shares your spirit. They are your "Chief Guide."
The Protectors: Warriors from your lineage who guard you against accidents and curses.
The Water Spirits (Ndau): Ancient guides (often not blood relatives) who bring gifts of healing, prophecy, and wealth.
You cannot invite a guest into your house if you don't offer them a seat. Spirits need a physical space in your home to anchor their energy.
The Action: Choose a clean, quiet corner or shelf (not in the bathroom).
The Setup: Cover it with a white cloth. Place a plain white candle and a glass of fresh water there.
The Rule: Keep this space clean. No dust, no clutter. This is their office.
You don't need fancy prayers. You just need to speak.
When: The best time is early morning (before sunrise) when the veil is thin.
How: Light the candle. Sit on the floor (or a low stool) to show humility.
What to say: Introduce yourself. "I am [Your Name], child of [Mother's Name] and [Father's Name]. I call upon my Ancestors of the [Surname] lineage. I am here. I am listening. Please show me the way."
The Key: Talk to them like they are sitting in the room. Tell them your worries. Tell them your dreams. Then, sit in silence for 5 minutes and listen.
If you are spiritually "dirty" (stressed, angry, or covered in negative energy), your guides cannot reach you. It is like trying to talk through a wall of mud.
The Fix: Before you try to connect, use White Salts or Imphepho (Sage) to cleanse your aura. (See my previous guide on Aura Cleansing).
Sobriety: If you want serious answers, avoid alcohol or drugs for 3 days before your ritual. These substances cloud the spiritual channel.
Once you start speaking to them (Phahla), they will start speaking back. Their favorite method is Dreams.
The Action: Keep a notebook by your bed.
The Discipline: When you wake up, write down everything, even if it makes no sense. Over time, you will see a pattern. That pattern is the message.
Asking Only When In Trouble: Imagine a friend who only calls you when they need money. You would stop answering. Do not treat your Ancestors like an ATM. Talk to them when you are happy, too. Thank them for the small things.
Impatience: Building a relationship takes time. Do not expect a burning bush on day one. Consistency is the key.
Fear: Hollywood has taught you to fear spirits. Your Ancestors love you. They are not demons. Approach them with love, and you will receive love.

Q: I don't know my biological parents. Can I still connect? A: Yes. Blood calls to blood. Even if you don't know their names, they know yours. Address them as "My Unknown Ancestors of Blood." They will step forward.
Q: Is this worshipping the dead? A: No. We worship God (The Creator). We venerate (honor) the Ancestors. Think of them as the Saints or the Angels who carry our prayers to God. They are the middlemen.
Q: How do I know if it's a Good Spirit or a Bad Spirit? A: Energy never lies. A Good Guide (Ancestor) feels warm, safe, heavy-but-grounding, and loving. A Bad Spirit feels cold, frantic, draining, or induces panic. If you feel fear, banish it immediately.
