How to Spot a Fake Psychic or Healer Online: A Safety Guide

The internet has made it easier than ever to find spiritual guidance. You can connect with a healer in Johannesburg while sitting in your living room in London.

But the internet has also opened the door for scammers, fraudsters, and "fake prophets" who prey on the desperate.

Every week, I hear heartbreaking stories from new clients: "Doctor, I paid a man on Instagram £500 to bring my husband back, and then he blocked me." "A psychic told me I would die in 3 days if I didn't send him money for a cow."

These people are not healers. They are criminals. And they give true African Spirituality a bad name.

As a sworn guardian of this tradition, I want to teach you exactly how to spot the wolves in sheep's clothing. Here are the 5 major "Red Flags" that should make you run away immediately.

In the Image above: Person looking suspiciously at a phone/laptop: How to identify fake online psychics and avoid spiritual healer scams. Learn the warning signs of fraudsters who use WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to steal your money and play with your emotions. Discover how to protect yourself, your heart, and your wallet before you send a single cent to a so‑called “prophet,” “traditional healer,” or “spell caster” online.

Red Flag #1: The "100% Guarantee" (The Lottery Lie)

Spiritual healing is like medicine. A doctor can treat cancer, but no honest doctor will guarantee a 100% cure, because life and death are ultimately in God's hands.

  • The Scam: "I guarantee you will win the Lotto this Friday." "I guarantee your ex will return in 24 hours."

  • The Truth: Spirits cannot rig the lottery. If they could, every Sangoma would be a billionaire. We can Open Roads for luck, but we cannot force numbers. Any healer promising "Instant Millions" is lying to you.

Red Flag #2: The Fear Tactic (Spiritual Extortion)

This is the most evil tactic. The scammer tries to terrify you into paying.

  • The Scam: "I see a dark cloud of death over your son. If you don't pay me $1,000 right now to slaughter a cow, he will die."

  • The Truth: A true Healer operates from Love, not Fear. While we may see warnings, we deliver them gently and offer solutions, not threats. We never hold your peace of mind hostage for money.

Red Flag #3: The Unsolicited DM

Did a "Grand Master" slide into your Instagram DMs or WhatsApp out of nowhere saying: "I feel drawn to your energy, you have a curse"?

  • The Scam: This is a copy-paste message they sent to 500 people today. They are fishing.

  • The Truth: In our tradition, you must come to the Healer, not the other way around. It is against spiritual protocol for me to chase strangers. If I am in your DMs uninvited, I am a fake.

Red Flag #4: The "Hidden Costs"

You pay for a reading. Then suddenly, there is a new cost.

  • The Scam: "The reading was $50, but now the spirits are angry. I need $200 for candles. Oh wait, now I need $500 for a goat." It never ends.

  • The Truth: A professional will be transparent about costs upfront. "The Consultation is X. The Cleansing Ritual is Y." There should be no surprise invoices from the Ancestors.

Red Flag #5: No Consultation, Just Action

  • The Scam: You ask for a Love Spell. They say, "Okay, send money," without asking for names, photos, or history.

  • The Truth: This is like a doctor performing surgery without checking your pulse. A real healer always does a Consultation (Throwing Bones or Reading) first to diagnose the problem before offering a cure.

Green Flags: What a Real Healer Looks Like

How do you know you are safe? Look for these signs:

  • They Listen: They want to know the history of the problem.

  • They Have Boundaries: They tell you what they can do, but also what they cannot do.

  • They Empower You: You leave the session feeling stronger and calmer, not more afraid.

  • They Are Visible: They are willing to show their face, speak on voice notes, or video call. They are real people.
