When you hear the word "Sangoma," what comes to mind?

For some in the West, it conjures images from Hollywood movies—dark magic, strange potions, and fear. For millions of people in Southern Africa, however, the word brings a feeling of safety, healing, and respect.

If you have been reading my posts about bone throwing, aura cleansing, or herbal remedies, you might be wondering: Who exactly is the person behind these rituals?

I am a Sangoma. And today, I want to invite you into my world to demystify what that actually means.

In the Image above: a Sangoma in traditional beads/attire: Dr. Bula Moyo, dressed in sacred colors, ancestral beads, and traditional animal-skin garments, standing in his healing space and explaining what a Sangoma is—an African Traditional Healer and Diviner who works with herbs, bones, and the guidance of the Ancestors to heal the body, mind, and spirit.

The Definition: The Healer of the Soul

The word Sangoma comes from the Zulu language. It translates loosely to "Healer" or "Diviner."

In Western society, if you are sick, you go to a doctor. If you are sad, you go to a psychologist. If you are lost spiritually, you go to a priest.

In African tradition, the Sangoma is all three combined.

We believe that a headache is rarely just a headache. It might be stress (psychological), it might be a warning from an ancestor (spiritual), or it might be dehydration (physical). A Sangoma treats the Whole Person, not just the symptom.

We Are Not "Self-Trained"

One of the biggest misconceptions is that anyone can decide to be a Sangoma. This is impossible. You do not choose this path; it chooses you.

Becoming a Sangoma begins with Ubizo (The Calling). This is a spiritual illness or intense life disruption sent by the Ancestors. To cure it, you must accept the call to serve.

  • The Training (Thwasa): Once we accept, we undergo years of rigorous apprenticeship under a senior healer. We live in the bush. We learn thousands of plant species. We learn to hear the voices of spirits. We undergo intense purification.

  • The Graduation: Only when we can successfully find hidden objects using only spiritual sight are we allowed to graduate. I am not a hobbyist. I am a trained professional with years of discipline behind me.

The 3 Tools of the Sangoma

1. Muthi (The Medicine)

We are the original pharmacists. Long before synthetic drugs, my people knew which tree bark cured fevers and which roots stopped anxiety.

  • Note: Muthi simply means "Tree" or "Medicine." It is not magic; it is botany. When I send you herbs for steaming or bathing, I am using nature’s chemistry to heal your energy.

2. Amathambo (The Bones)

We are the diagnosticians. Just as a Western doctor uses an X-Ray or MRI to look inside your body, I use Bone Divination to look inside your life. The bones allow me to see where your luck is blocked or where your enemies are hiding.

3. Amadlozi (The Ancestors)

We are the mediums. I act as a telephone line between the physical world and the Spiritual World. When I speak to you, I often pass on messages from your deceased loved ones who are trying to guide you.

Common Myths vs. The Truth

Myth: Sangomas practice "Black Magic" or "Voodoo." Truth: A true Sangoma is a healer of Light. We are sworn to protect life. There are sorcerers who use energy to harm (Abathakathi), but they are the enemies of Sangomas. I spend my days breaking curses, not casting them.

Myth: You have to be African to visit a Sangoma. Truth: Healing is universal. I have clients in London, Berlin, New York, and Sydney. Spirit does not care about your race or passport; it only cares about your heart.

Myth: It conflicts with Christianity or Religion. Truth: Many Sangomas (including myself) believe in God (The Creator). We view the Ancestors not as Gods, but as intermediaries—like Angels or Saints—who are closer to the Creator than we are.

Why the World Needs Sangomas Now

In modern times, we have iPhones and AI, but we are lonelier and more anxious than ever. Western medicine numbs the pain, but it often fails to answer the question: "Why is this happening to me?"

That is where I come in. I am here to help you reconnect with your roots, ground your spirit in the earth, and find meaning in the chaos.
